Summary

A celebratory edition to mark the fiftieth anniversary of this unforgettable classic

'Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird。'

Atticus Finch gives this advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of this classic novel - a black man charged with attacking a white girl。 Through the eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores the issues of race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s with compassion and humour。 She also creates one of the great heroes of literature in their father, whose lone struggle for justice pricks the conscience of a town steeped in prejudice and hypocrisy。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I read this book twice, both times for school。 I will be the first to admit my bias toward the book, this is not typically the type of novel I would pick up。 There is very little to the book aside from the disappointing trial of Tom Robinson (found guilty despite obviously being innocent) and the ending where they were attacked by Bob Ewell and saved by Boo Radley。 Everything else revolves around a normal disdain for school, playing, and children's theories about the mysterious Boo Radley。 There I read this book twice, both times for school。 I will be the first to admit my bias toward the book, this is not typically the type of novel I would pick up。 There is very little to the book aside from the disappointing trial of Tom Robinson (found guilty despite obviously being innocent) and the ending where they were attacked by Bob Ewell and saved by Boo Radley。 Everything else revolves around a normal disdain for school, playing, and children's theories about the mysterious Boo Radley。 There was nothing outside of the trial and ending that intrigued me and the beginning was a bore to read。 Again, though, this is not typically a book I would pick up of my own accord and read at leisure。 I found the character of Atticus to be likeable while the rest were irking or downright evil, with the exception of the black characters (literally)。 I'm sure plenty have enjoyed this book, I am not one of them。 I was bored。 。。。more

Even though I read this book for school, I thoroughly enjoyed it。 Scout (the narrator) provides nuance through her innocence and age which makes the story very interesting。

I loved this book。 It explored racism and taught the reader lessons through the eyes of an innocent girl who is just trying to navigate life。 In a predominately racist society (Maycomb, Alabama), I learn how much of an issue racism was, and still is。 I first read this as part of my national 5 English。 I enjoyed it at that time but never fully understood until I read it again。 It has furthered my interest in the law, much like Atticus, and preferably in human rights。 It taught me a lot of lessons I loved this book。 It explored racism and taught the reader lessons through the eyes of an innocent girl who is just trying to navigate life。 In a predominately racist society (Maycomb, Alabama), I learn how much of an issue racism was, and still is。 I first read this as part of my national 5 English。 I enjoyed it at that time but never fully understood until I read it again。 It has furthered my interest in the law, much like Atticus, and preferably in human rights。 It taught me a lot of lessons through the eyes of scout。 。。。more

I think that To Kill a Mockingbird is a good book。 It's a book that has a lot of detail in it, but it's not to the point where it's too complicated to understand。 I would definitely recommend this book。 I think that To Kill a Mockingbird is a good book。 It's a book that has a lot of detail in it, but it's not to the point where it's too complicated to understand。 I would definitely recommend this book。 。。。more

I liked the story。 It is one of the stories that I kind of wish I was in there。 Though prejudice is dealt with and other things。 I would love to be in that adventure。

I read this bock for my junior year American Literature class and it was a purity good read in itself。 the lesion's thought by Atticus were merely correct。 my favorite would be "shoot all the blue jays you want as long as you have a shot, but never kill a mocking bird because it is a sin" this is also a very famous line。 when Scout questioned why Atticus explained that "they never cause harm and they just make songs for us to lessen to。" I read this bock for my junior year American Literature class and it was a purity good read in itself。 the lesion's thought by Atticus were merely correct。 my favorite would be "shoot all the blue jays you want as long as you have a shot, but never kill a mocking bird because it is a sin" this is also a very famous line。 when Scout questioned why Atticus explained that "they never cause harm and they just make songs for us to lessen to。" 。。。more

A great story although not for the faint of heart these days。 The language is true to the way people spoke in the deep south during the period and a particular racial slur is often dropped in casual conversation。 However, its use is important as it tracks the main character, Scout's, understanding of its meaning and the people it is applied to。 As she comes to terms with its use, her view of the people she has grown up with evolves, and her view of the sleepy little town she calls home changes。 A great story although not for the faint of heart these days。 The language is true to the way people spoke in the deep south during the period and a particular racial slur is often dropped in casual conversation。 However, its use is important as it tracks the main character, Scout's, understanding of its meaning and the people it is applied to。 As she comes to terms with its use, her view of the people she has grown up with evolves, and her view of the sleepy little town she calls home changes。 The story itself is a fascinating examination of prejudices from racial, to social, to personal。 Although I did not grow up in that region of the country or era, I was often reminded of the small town attitudes I witnessed in my childhood, particularly towards anyone "not from around here。" It is a great read, although I would warn anyone picking it up, this story is not the feel good hit of the century。 However, the questions it brings up and the themes it explores make the journey more than worthwhile。 。。。more

This is one of my favorite books, I highly recommend it to everyone。 Being written from the point of view of a young child, in my opinion, makes this story even more interesting。 It may be a heavy read, but it is not difficult to read through。 It takes the topic of racism and makes such a story out of it where they just tell the message, "racism is bad, don't be racist", but it really shows why and makes the reader come to conclusions themselves。 Overall, very well done, amazing book。 This is one of my favorite books, I highly recommend it to everyone。 Being written from the point of view of a young child, in my opinion, makes this story even more interesting。 It may be a heavy read, but it is not difficult to read through。 It takes the topic of racism and makes such a story out of it where they just tell the message, "racism is bad, don't be racist", but it really shows why and makes the reader come to conclusions themselves。 Overall, very well done, amazing book。 。。。more

I finished it。 I wanted to love it, but I really didn't。 If I have to teach it again, I'll read it again, but probably not elsewise。 I still view it as an important book, and maybe if I could put myself in the shoes of an 8th grader reading it for the first time, the magic of Boo Radley or the importance of Tom Robinson would strike me more profoundly, but I honestly experienced it mostly as a slog of a read。 I finished it。 I wanted to love it, but I really didn't。 If I have to teach it again, I'll read it again, but probably not elsewise。 I still view it as an important book, and maybe if I could put myself in the shoes of an 8th grader reading it for the first time, the magic of Boo Radley or the importance of Tom Robinson would strike me more profoundly, but I honestly experienced it mostly as a slog of a read。 。。。more

When I was 8 or so and looked at the title of this book, I always thought it was a novel about birds。。 and oh boy how wrong I was。 I'm glad that I've picked it up from the library at this level of maturity, because 8 year old me would have found very little about ornithology nor understand the symbolism within the novel。 Harper Lee has artistically portrayed the attitudes of the deep south through the lens of a young girl - Scout。 Her struggle to combine what she's experiencing in a rural Alabam When I was 8 or so and looked at the title of this book, I always thought it was a novel about birds。。 and oh boy how wrong I was。 I'm glad that I've picked it up from the library at this level of maturity, because 8 year old me would have found very little about ornithology nor understand the symbolism within the novel。 Harper Lee has artistically portrayed the attitudes of the deep south through the lens of a young girl - Scout。 Her struggle to combine what she's experiencing in a rural Alabama town steeped in racism versus what she's observed of her father as a balanced attorney with a sense of morality was the most interesting part for me。 Her father - Atticus, also helps serve as a moral compass for Scout to behave in the midst of all that's happening。 In a sense, I reckon most readers would resonate with his character and the gentle demeanour that he emulates in the face of adversity。 On a further exploration of the novel, it seems that attorneys in real life also use him as a role model even though he is a fictitious character!I thoroughly enjoyed and devoured the book, and consider myself to be a budding Scout, still viewing and understanding the viewpoints of many。 And with it, it really makes you consider how much of your current world view has been influenced by parents :) 。。。more
